Octane Meter – An octane analyzer is a laboratory equipment used to measure octane in gasoline. The octane analyzer complies with ASTM D2699 and ASTM D2700 standards. Octane Analyzer is available as a portable laboratory method.

How is Octane Number Determined?
The octane number of liquid fuels is measured by the comparative method of the fuel’s resistance to knocking, based on the mixture of Iso-octane and n-Heptane fuels, which are called reference fuels.
Since the engine design is shaped according to the characteristics of the fuel, the octane number measurements of the fuel to be used are carried out under conditions determined by international standards.
Reference fuels to be used in this context were accepted as “n-Heptane” and “Iso-octane” and their octane numbers were specified as 0 and 100, respectively (ASTM D2699, D2700). Octane measurement experiments are carried out with variable volumetric mixtures of these fuels. For example, the knock resistance of gasoline called 97 octane corresponds to a mixture of 97% Iso-octane and 3% n-Heptane by volume (Yozgatlıgil, A., 2018).
The determination of the octane number is standardized by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) 51756 norm.
Only specially designed engines such as Cooperative Fuel Research (CFR) and Badische Aniline und Soda Fabrik (BASF) have been found suitable for the application of these methods. These engines are single-cylinder, four-stroke, spark-ignition engines with variable compression ratio and cooled by the thermosiphon principle.
In the ASTM D2699 standard, two types of octane measurements are defined as RON (Research Octane Number) and MON (Engine Octane Number).
While the softer operating conditions of the engine are simulated in the RON method, the harsher operating conditions are analyzed in the MON method.
In other words, while RON octane number measurement fits the fuel’s knocking condition during acceleration, the octane number calculated by the MON method is based on the knock under overload, and thus finds a more realistic and practical octane value (Yozgatlıgil, A. , 2018).
In the MON method, the fuel-air mixture is heated behind the carburetor, and in RON, the air is heated before the carburetor. The octane number found by the MON method for the same fuel is lower than the value obtained by the RON method.
For this reason, in some countries such as the USA, Brazil and Canada, the octane number indicated at the fuel stations is given as the average of the MON and RON numbers. This average figure is also known as the Anti-Knock Index (AKI). In Turkey and in other European countries in general, the octane number is expressed in RON.

Octane meter / Cetane Analyzer Part:
The principle of determining the octane number of vehicle gasoline is based on internationally accepted ASTM-CFR test machine results. It is tested under harsh test conditions using a standard engine with variable compression ratio and is measured against a standard reference fuel. Octane (or Cetane) Numbers determine the total dielectric constant of the oil sample.
It is based on a theoretical and rigorous mathematical model for regression, advanced electronic measurement techniques as tools, and CFR test machine measurement results as standard.
The targeted regression method makes a breakthrough in the measurement of non-physical variables, ensuring the accuracy of the measurement; this is equivalent to passing the CFR testing machine measurement results to our instrument in accordance with the international standard. The instrument consists of microcomputer, sensor, RGB touch screen and printer.
